This year Cleveland was very successful in hosting some prestigious tournaments.
During the year we hosted the following.
PGA Northern Area Finals for the Glenbrae Trophy.English Golf Union County Finals. (Third most prestigious Amateur Tournament in the British Isles)
Mid Amateur International Tournament with countries like Switzerland, Austria, England and Scotland taking part.
On the home success front a home grown Junior Adam Best Captained the England Youth team. Played in the home internationals and represented England during a tour of Holland. He has also won the Yorkshire Order of Merit. This was achieved by winning and being placed for points in top Amateur competitions around Yorkshire. Adam was also a successful member of the Yorkshire Team who won the EGU County finals which I have mentioned was played over the links at Cleveland.
This is a flavour of what is happening on your doorstep. If you wish to have more detail perhaps we could meet to cover the topics.
for East Redcar and DormanstownAgreement was reached early in 2005 between the Golf Club and the Programme Management Unit for SRB funding allocated though Redcar & Cleveland County by One North East to enhance an a derelict area in Warrenby to allow use as a golf practice area. Work commenced in July 2005 on the old Peart’s Coal Yard where thousands of old tyres were removed and the site leveled with soil. A shortage of top soil slowed the project but silt removed from the lake in Locke Park was used. Seeding took place towards the end of 2006 and the site will be fully functional from the spring of 2007.
Introduction to golf training courses for young persons between the ages of 9 to 16 years were introduced in the autumn of 2005 where groups from East Redcar schools were invited to four 2hour sessions per group. Over 100 young persons and 15 adults were introduced to golf. The people were introduced to the rules of golf, the need for etiquette and good behavior, the equipment available and how to join the Golf Club. This training appeared to be successful and all who participated expressed their pleasure as to the introduction given. All young persons were invited to join the Golf Club
Redcar & Cleveland County introduced sports coordinators into their education structure and Ms Leslie Shepherd took over the contacts with schools. She is based within the Sacred Heart School and will be responsible for any further coaching offered through the Golf Club. Any school may contact this lady who has funds to carry out the training. Equally, schools or groups may contact Mr. Craig Donaldson, the Professional at the Golf Club, who will arrange private coaching for groups of 10 for a small fee from April 2007.
The Club has a thriving junior section. Several of these younger members have shown great success. One person is +1 handicap and played for Yorkshire, another is the Captain of the England under 16 side and hopes to have a scholarship from the USA to continue his development and another, at the age of 9 years, won a national competition.
The Club is committed to introduce anyone interested in golf through taster courses. As such, several of these courses will be held throughout 2007 starting in April.
