URGENT NEWS! Bogus Callers! Retired Royal Navy sailor Frank May has warned old folk in Cleveland to be on their guard after he was targeted by bogus officials.
Two men came to the pensioner’s home in Middlesbrough earlier this month and charged £200 for some roofing work.
They returned last week and offered to tidy up his garden for £600, He had the sense to turn them down. However, after they had gone 80-year-old Frank May found his wallet containing £200 and treasured personal papers had been stolen.
He told police: “I feel angry and hurt that people can, quite blatantly, invade your privacy and do this.
“It is despicable, cowardly behaviour. And I have no doubt they will go on to target more elderly people like myself unless they are caught. It makes me so angry and frustrated. I don’t think any punishment that the courts can impose is suitable for this kind of offending.”
The two men who called at his home in Lexden Avenue turned up last Friday (February 23rd) in a white Ford Transit van. The engine sounded “rough.”
Both were white and in their early 30’s. One was around 6ft tall and of medium build. Both were polite, spoke with local accents and mentioned that they were from the Hartlepool area.
PC Jeff Lillystone, who is appealing for any information that can help track the two men down, added: “All too often elderly people blindly put their trust in such workmen - and find that trust is totally abused.
“All too often money is stolen, the work carried out is shoddy and the parasites responsible simply go on to target more and more vulnerable people.
He said anyone who can help trace the people responsible is asked to ring 01642 303126 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
